Stating the Obvious
Addressing the Needs of Our Building – October 2, 2011
Our vision is simple: We long to see God transform everything! We are committed to proclaiming the good news that God sent his Son Jesus to redeem and restore humans to himself and to one another. We are committed to empowering men and women to live in light of that news — growing as a Christian community and as missionaries to our city and the world.
In 2008, First Calvary Baptist Church gave us their building — with no strings attached. We were a small core of young people, and we knew the building came with many needs. But as a church committed to the spiritual, cultural, and social renewal of Kansas City, we were excited about seeing the redemption and restoration of a broken physical space as well.
Our passion doesn’t revolve around a building. Our passion revolves around Jesus. But our building provides us opportunities to build community and invest in our city in ways we can’t accomplish without a building. Since cultivating communities, not renovating buildings, is our priority, we have only addressed needs related to the structural integrity of our building (roof, critical stone work and windows) thus far.
The growth we’ve experienced since the birth of our church has far surpassed our expectations and we’ve seen God do more in our lives than we ever imagined. Our growth also means that we need to address critical facets of our building so that we can safely and hospitably accommodate the thousands that worship here monthly, the growing number of weekly events for our church and the community, and our expanding staff.
There is only one way to pull this off, and so we are challenging you — asking you to step up and give sacrificially to the mission of this local church. Our prayer is that this will be a season of deeper engagement at Redeemer. That is, we are praying not merely that you would begin contributing financially to our mission, or that you would give sacrificially beyond what you are currently contributing to our mission (of course, we are praying for both!), but also that more of you would join us in God’s mission in the city — contributing personally and engaging relationally at Redeemer.
In the days and weeks to come, we will offer more clarity in terms of the vision and specifics related to our construction needs so that we can make our building as safe, hospitable, and functional as necessary to serve our mission of cultivating communities of transformed disciples for the glory of God and the good of the city. In the meantime, we hope this big picture will awaken passion in you and will move you to begin making prayerful financial decisions and sacrifices. This will allow us to build momentum and keep our mission moving forward.
