Wes Crawford

Responsibilities
Wes is responsible for the directing of our corporate worship gatherings, which involves crafting the liturgy for each week, coordinating musicians and other volunteers, and many times actually leading our corporate worship. He also oversees Redeemer’s efforts to relationally engage our community, teaches in the Gospel Class, and engages in other aspects of pastoral ministry.

Family
Melissa and I have been married since July of 1999. We have four beautiful girls, Anna, Maggie, Claire, and Elaine.

Hometown
Fort Worth, Texas

Education & Experience
I went to music school at University of North Texas, and then received Bible and theology training through my local church for a few years while working in college ministry. I then headed to Monterrey, Mexico, where we lived for four years as missionaries before moving to Kansas City.

Favorite movie(s)
Wes Anderson films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Children of Men

Favorite TV show(s)
Arrested Development

Favorite music
I like all kinds of music, so it’s hard to say what my favorites are. Wilco is my favorite band, but I also love a lot of roots music like Gillian Welch and Buddy Miller. I studied jazz in college, and since moving to KC have gotten back into listening to it.

Favorite book(s) outside the Bible

  • Desiring God by John Piper has had a huge impact on me in college and to this day.
  • Jonathan Edwards’ A Treatise on the Religious Affections has formed my thinking about worship tremendously.
  • Knowing God by J.I. Packer made me acutely aware of how small my view of God was and, at the same, gave me a taste for its expansion.
  • The Letters of John Newton (which is now available in several expanded editions) was an important piece of the puzzle for me to see that pastoral ministry never “moves on” from the gospel.
  • In The Missionary Movement in Christian History, Andrew Walls helped me to see church history as one huge story of Christ building his Church.
  • Hobbies/interests
I love playing music, listening to music, writing music, learning new instruments, etc.
